Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Seracult® slide is not acceptable

Specimen Volume: 1 mL of gastric contents/emesis

Collection Instructions: Specimen obtained from nasogastric intubation or vomitus is acceptable.




Gastroccult® is a screening method for the detection of occult blood in gastric aspirate or vomitus. The presence of significant quantities of blood in gastric contents can be from trauma, a gastric lesion such as gastritis, ulcer, or carcinoma, or can be swallowed from the mouth, nasopharynx, or lungs.
