Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 30 minutes of collection and must be dropped off or collected at the BCH Foothills hospital. Specimen is NOT to be collected or dropped off at any of the BCH satellite sites.  An appointment must be made with the laboratory before bringing in a specimen. Call 303-415-7711 to set up an appointment.

 

Container/Tube: Hard plastic container

Specimen Volume: Entire coital specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation for 48 to 72 hours.

2. The best method of collection is by masturbation.

3. Do not use a condom for collection.

4. Keep specimen warm by carrying specimen in an inside pocket or by holding against the body.

5. Specimens are accepted Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Note: 1. Include the following information with specimen:

A. Method of collection (masturbation or coitus interruptus)

B. Days of abstinence

C. Collection or transport problems (e.g., incomplete specimen, exposure to temperature extremes, etc.)

D. Time of collection on container.

2. Time of collection is required.

Methodology

Includes sperm count and motility.

Utilizes World Health Organization (WHO) “strict criteria” in the evaluation of motility, morphology, and count. Includes functional sperm concentration (FSC), and the number of motile and morphologically normal sperm per milliliter. Also includes pH, liquifaction, and volume.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.

Note: Very low quality specimens are referred to a pathologist for review. See “Hematology Interpretive Information” in Special Instructions.
